PRE-NATAL EDUCATION

St. Michael’s Episcopal Cathedral

“Baby Steps Parenting & Prenatal Education/Incentive Program” (Boise, ID)

Who They Serve : Low-income pregnant women in Ada County

What They Do : Offer prenatal education and parenting advice

Brief Description :

This church works with over 20 other organizations to offer prenatal education, parenting advice, and social/emotional support for limited-income women. The program's primary goal is to reduce the number of premature births and babies born with low birth weight. Although 10.2% of babies born to low-income women in Ada County are low-birth weight, only 1.3% of mothers in this program had a baby with a low-birth weight. The program also seeks to strengthen families with infants and young children by educating parents, providing support and counseling, providing material goods through an incentive program, and referring clients to other resources in the area.

Tip : In several states including CA, AL, and NJ, the March of Dimes sponsors a program for prenatal education for Hispanic women called Comenzando bien. Many of its grantees are faith-based organizations and congregations. FBOs can also purchase the curriculum for the Comenzando bien program from the March of Dimes. Visit this link for details.
